Day Five eCourse - Proper Placement

Proper Placement is another key component to a great embroidery stitch out!

Some things that must be taken into consideration are the sizes and styles of the items to be embroidered, the size of the monogram or design, the hooping of the item and the customer's preference.  Below is a photo of a hooping aid, and a placement aid.  The placement aid I use is the Embroiderer's Buddy.  It is an L shaped marked ruler and it gives you a general idea of where to place the design on a garment according to size and gender.

Here are some general placements:

Linens:

Place the design on the opposite side of the label on the opposite end.

Sheets: Bottom of the design centered about 2" above the wide hemline.
Pillow Cases: Design centered between the edge of open end and hem stitching or border design.
Bath Towels: 4" above hem or 2" above border.
Hand Towels: 2" above hem or 1" above border.
Wash Cloths: 1 ½" above hem or 1" above border.

 Mens:

Shirt Cuffs: Top center of the wrist, start 1" to 1 3/8" from the center of the cuff toward the buttonhole and ¼" to ½" above the cuff edge.

Shirt Pockets: Place the design ¼" to ½" down from the pocket edge and centered between the seams.

Ties: 1½" to 2 ½" up from the bottom tip or 9" to 11" up from the bottom tip when worn with a vest.

Ladies:

Blouses/Robes: Placemen is 4" to 6" down from the left shoulder seam and 3" to 5" over from the center.

Sweaters: Placement is 3 ½" to 4 ½" down from the collar and centered on the front.

General:

T-shirts: 7 ½" to 9" down from the left shoulder seam and 4" to 6" over from the center.

Golf Shirts: 71/2" to 9" down from the left shoulder seam and 4" to 6" over from the center, in line with the collar meeting the shoulder seam.

Turtle Necks: Left neck area centered between center front and left shoulder seam. Bottom of design ½" to ¾" up from bottom edge.

Sweatshirts: Place the top of the design 3" to 3 ½" down from the bottom of the neck edging.

One thing to be aware of is placement on women's shirts in the left chest location.  Be sure to place your design in an appropriate location so that people are not focused on the bosom area! Below is a DO and a DON'T for illustration purposes.  If you are in business for yourself, remember to consider the customer's preference!  Some customers know exactly what they want, even if you disagree.  Some customers are not too sure and will be eager to hear your suggestions.  Be sure to please your customer all the while making sure that the end result is something you are proud to attach your name to (example of someone asking "who embroidered THAT THING"?)

This concludes the FREE Five Day Embroidery eCourse.  Thank you for attending!  More exciting topics to come!
